Understanding the surface finishes of Stainless Steel.

Understanding the surface finishes of Stainless Steel.

Surface finish is an important element in any specification of stainless steel
regardless of the intended use. For those applications where appearance is
important, finish is a design element and must be specified. In non-decorative
applications the surface finish may have implications for friction, wear, and
maintenance or corrosion resistance and must, therefore, also must be
carefully chosen and clearly specified.

The choice of finish should never be left to the supplier, or the specification
loosely worded, such as “Type 304 with a 180 grit finish”. A proper reference
or specification must be provided to the vendor. For an e.g., Mentioning “grit
180” loosely can have a differing meaning amongst locations and even
individuals. Some may resemble it with Hairline grit, and some may confuse it
with Criss-cross or Matte finish.

Types of Finishes:
There are a wide variety of finishes in Stainless Steel industry. But it is utterly
difficult for human mind to remember the specifications and look of all of
them. We can classify Finishes on the basis of their actual applications.

  1. Mill Finish:
Mill Finishes include 1D, 2B, 2D, BA, PP and many similar finishes. The
mentioned finishes are dominantly used worldwide. A Mill Finish has its
application in majorly Construction or Fabrication where the material is
not visible on the exterior or in the finished product. These finishes are
not meant to look good, as it is been utilised in the core and interiors.
  2. Processed Finish:
Processed Finishes include No.4, No.8, Mirror, Matte, Hairline, Scotch
Brite, and many similar finishes. A processed finish has its application
widely in Fabrication. Fabrication work includes fabricating Utensils,
Cutlery, Automotive, Industrial, and Construction. These finishes are
meant to make the product look professional but not pretty or
    attractive.
  3. Decorative Finish:
Decorative Finishes include Etched, Checkered, Embossed, Beads,
Hairline, and many similar finishes. A decorative sheet has its application
widely into Designer and Décor industry. It is used in a wide range of
categories from Decorating the exterior of Buildings to Designing a kids
    playhouse.
Understanding Surfaces finishes is important in Stainless Steel industry.
Choosing the right surface finish can be tricky yet simple. Pre-planning
the application and costing usually serves the buyers right.
